One of the primary focuses of the 2021-2022 MMS HSA is organizing advocacy efforts to help improve the experience of our students.

Experience in the district shows us that the "squeaky wheel get the grease" so we are looking for families who are interested in helping our advocacy efforts or who have stories to share so that we can help improve the lives of all MMS students. Whether you want to write letters to district leaders, submit written comments or participate in Public Speaks, we need your voice. Recently we brought the district's attention to the broken elevator at MMS and we are optimistic that a repair will be happening very soon!

If you're interested and able to aid in our efforts, please share your contact information or story here: https://forms.gle/iSH8Bjb47GUHyBKUA
The MMS HSA raises funds through a No Frills fundraiser, a simple link that allows you to donate what you can afford. Without the support of families, we would not be able to provide the supplemental support to the students and staff.

From the desk of Principal Gronau
Lunch update: Students have demonstrated responsible behavior during lunch and we want to offer them more options to socialize with one another. For this reason, beginning Monday, we will discontinue locations assigned based on teams. Students will select the area in which they have lunch. We will cap the number of students in the courtyards so that we can safely supervise everyone with our available staff, but our aim is to allow for choice for our students.
Cell phone use update: The District has distributed Chromebooks to 80% of our MMS students and we are working hard to make sure the remaining student get them as well. The District expects that all students use the district-issued Chromebooks to allow digital learning to be integrated into the daily curriculum. As a result, effective October 4, 2021, students in all grades (6-8) will not be permitted to carry cell phones or personal devices (tablets, etc.) in the building during school hours. These devices are, in general, a distraction for our students and provide opportunities for misuse; we want our students to enjoy being together and connect to one another without a screen in hand. Upon arrival they must store phones in lockers where they are to remain off and away. They may retrieve their phones at the end of the day from their locker. If students violate this procedural directive, the phone will be confiscated and secured in the main office for retrieval at the end of the day

We’ll be back in-person at 9AM on September 25, 2021!

For 18 years, the Newstead 5K race has kicked off the new school year in South Orange-Maplewood, attracting hundreds of enthusiastic runners and walkers for a morning of healthy activity, connection and fundraising. After a virtual “INstead 5K” last fall, we’re thrilled to be able to run together again this September. Of course, if you’re not around that morning, you can still participate by running or walking when and where you’d like.

The race will begin at the South Mountain Annex at 9:00 AM on September 25th, with chip-timing provided by CompuScore.  Race registration is here. Entry is only $25 per person until September 18; after that the registration fee will increase to $35. Participants will get our popular race T-shirts (while supplies last).

We are most grateful to the 47 local businesses and families who sponsored last year’s INstead 5K! In addition to being featured on Achieve’s website and monthly newsletter, sponsors receive community exposure by getting their names or logos on the popular race T-shirts.

Email director@achievefoundation.org to learn about sponsoring this year’s race.

MMS HSA News: First Week of School

MMS HSA News
First Week of School!

MAPLEWOOD MIDDLE SCHOOL HOME & SCHOOL ASSOCIATION

Welcome to the 2021-2022 School Year!

The MMS Home and School Alliance (HSA) would like to welcome all students and families to Maplewood Middle School!! Live and in person! The HSA is here to partner with families, teachers and administrators with the common goal of promoting the education and well-being of all students at MMS.

The HSA has been working with Principal Gronau and MMS administrators over the summer to prepare for a year that will hopefully contain a great deal of normalcy but also continue to navigate the on-going challenges of Covid-19.  It is our hope to strengthen a sense of community at MMS and create avenues for families to be involved and to have input into their children’s middle school education and experience.

The HSA is responsible for funding and organizing student activities throughout the year, including ice cream socials, field trips, guest speakers, and eighth grade graduation events. We also fund teacher appreciation events and various teacher projects as well as support fine arts and cultural programming.  This year we hope to also raise money for school beautification projects so that the MMS facility is the school that our diverse student body deserves. Finally we serve as a mechanism for parent feedback to the district leaders and we welcome your input and advocacy on behalf of our students.

We encourage you to become a member of the MMS HSA to show your support for student and teacher activities.  You can go to mmshsa.org to register for membership. We also encourage you to sign up on the website for the weekly newsletter to keep you apprised of MMS HSA activities and important dates.

HSA meetings are typically the third Thursday of the month at 7pm-8:30pm.  If you would like to attend a meeting or have an issue you’d like to add to the agenda, please email mmshsainfo@gmail.com  If you have any questions or suggestions in general, you can also email us at the same address.

Hope your children have a wonderful school year and here’s hoping it’s as normal as possible!

Best,

Laura Booker

Please consider donating to this fundraiser for the family of Moussa Fofana as they struggle with his loss.
Maplewood Middle School was a second home to Moussa. His bright smile lit up the room and will always be felt in his absence. We wish the family healing and our thoughts and prayers are with the Fofana Family.  Please donate to help Moussa's family with funeral costs and anything they should need.  Big or small, every penny counts because we want the family to know we stand with them through this tragic time.
6th grade families! Let’s get our kids together for a fun movie night at the school.
To make it happen we need your financial support. Please make a donation! We need you!
While this academic year has certainly seen its fair share of difficulties, our teachers and administration have worked hard to navigate these challenges. If you are looking for a way to thank your child’s teacher, principal, guidance counselor, coach or any staff member in our schools, why not consider an Achieve “Honor Your Teacher” Tribute? For a minimum suggested donation of $10, Achieve will send a year-end thank you card with a personalized message to your designated recipient on behalf of your child and/or family. Teachers tell us they love to receive these notes of gratitude, and your contribution will help Achieve continue to support educator grants across our district. Sending a tribute is easy, just fill out the form on Achieve's website before June 16th.
The Home and School Association (HSA) acts as the connective tissue between teachers, administrators, and families. If you've got an hour or two to spare, we sure could use your help! Currently filling many roles, reach out at mmshsainfo@gmail.com.

Week of June 7

MAPLEWOOD MIDDLE SCHOOL HOME & SCHOOL ASSOCIATION
PLEASE HELP our 8th graders! After a very tough year for all students, we are so pleased to host an 8th Grade Social and a Moving Up Ceremony to help our graduates say a final goodbye to MMS!! PLEASE - consider contributing to our 8th GRADE FUND (link here) so that we can celebrate our kids in style! YOUR GENEROSITY MAKES A BIG DIFFERENCE - THANK YOU!
Moving Up Ceremony
Join us as we celebrate the Maplewood Middle School Class of 2021. The ceremony will be June 24 at 9 a.m. at Underhill Field. More details to come.
Mr. Kessler is looking for a few engineers or architects to help judge our Bridge Over Troubled Waters contest. Geometry students are building bridges out of popsicle sticks and glue. We need some professional eyes to help judge the bridges on their strength, design, and planning. The presentation will be on the front lawn of MMS on June 11 at 3:30 pm. Please contact Mr. Kessler if you are interested.
The Home and School Association (HSA) acts as the connective tissue between teachers, administrators, and families. If you've got an hour or two to spare, we sure could use your help! Currently filling many roles, reach out at mmshsainfo@gmail.com.
Support the Columbia High School Class of 2021 with these one-of-a-kind lawn signs! All proceeds benefit Midnight Madness. You can order the sign through the Cougar Shop (first item you’ll see is the supporter sign): www.chscougarshop.com. Thank you! Go Cougars and Go Seniors!

Night of 100 Dinners Event
This year, the Nights of 100 Dinners event will take place in May and June (instead of the traditional March) in the hopes that virtual or Covid-cautious, outdoor gatherings may be possible. Hosting offers not only a benefit to Achieve, but also the opportunity to come together with old and new friends to support students and educators across the South Orange-Maplewood School District. Ready to host?
