MAPLEWOOD MIDDLE SCHOOL HOME & SCHOOL ASSOCIATION
************************************
Hello MMS!

****THE PRINCIPAL’S CORNER****
Please click HERE for this week’s message from Ms. Gronau.

Traffic Flow & Battle of the Classes!!

We are sure you heard this message already, but the holidays can be so hectic, please remember tomorrow starts the new traffic pattern at MMS.  The details are in Principal Gronau’s weekly message and shown in a graphic here (courtesy of MMS community member Jamaine Cripe, via FB post). We know everyone will agree, the safety of our children is well worth the rerouting. As we gear up to the holiday break, this week is sure to be fun for the students! It is Battle of the Classes, the MMS version of Spirit Week. Please encourage your students to participate, and to also look for the ways to give back to the community at the same time. A quick thank you to Maureen Griffis and Gabrielle Graziano, who chaired the Staff & Faculty Holiday Luncheon, it was a wonderful celebration.
Please take a moment to read through this email. We hope you all have a safe and happy holiday break.  As always, if you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to us!!

Dates to Remember
12/18                      BOE Meeting

12/25 – 1/1             Holiday Recess

BATTLE OF THE CLASSES IS HERE!!!
Battle of the Classes is finally here. There are fun ways to participate, both in spirit and with good will.  Please see below for how the students can participate, and even a few opportunities for the adults too!

Schedule for Spirit Week:
Monday - 12/18 - Monochromatic Monday   Pick one color, only one!

Tuesday - 12/19 - Twinning Tuesday   Dress to match other people!

Wednesday - 12/20 - Idol Wednesday    Dress or represent your favorite character (from a tv show, movie, book, musical) or real life person!

Thursday - 12/21 - Lazy Day    Wear an outfit that's comfortable and lazy!

Friday - 12/22 - Battle of the Classes! (Class Color Day)    Wear red, white and black to represent MMS!
Want to represent a specific grade?  6th = white, 7th = black, 8th = red

Battle T-Shirts
Kids love the Battle each year and a great way to capture their enthusiasm is with a Battle of the Classes grade level t-shirt.  This year the students worked directly on the design!  The HSA will be selling shirts during the lunches on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.  The shirts are $12 and not only feed the fun of the Battle of the Classes, but raise money for the HSA!  It's a win-win!  Quantities are limited so send your student to school with $12 cash or a check payable to MMS-HSA.  Want to get in on the fun too?  Volunteer to help sell the shirts!  Click here to access the sign up genius for the shirt sales!

More ways to Battle
In addition to the food drive and box tops, Student Council and the Social Work team are partnering to bring gifts to some local families! Student Council delivered boxes to each team leader's room. Each team leader received a note-card with the focus for gifts requests and the age of the recipients. See the note cards for Gift Requests HERE. If you have any questions please reach out to Ms. O'Sullivan or the social work interns. Gifts Due December 20!
Thanks for helping our community enjoy the holidays!  -MMS Student Council

FUNDRAISING

Trivia Night
SAVE THE DATE! Please mark your calendars and plan to join in the fun for our biggest fundraiser of the year! February 2, 2018 at The Woodland. Come and show off your knowledge of pointless useless information.  There will be fabulous food and you are welcome to bring whatever your drink of choice will be for the evening.  Keep your eyes peeled for when ticket sales begin.  Tickets always go fast, the Woodland has limited capacity and you don't want to be left out in the cold.  Question: What is celebrated on February 2nd and has been since 1887?  Please don't be fooled...the questions for Trivia Night are always much more challenging than this one.

MIGHTY NEST
Just in time for the holidays!  Purchase any item on the Mighty Nest site and MMS will receive 15% of all purchases! Mighty Nest features housewares, water bottles, lunch gear, cleaning products and more.  All items are sourced to make it easier for families to create a healthy home; each product has been thoroughly researched to be free of concerning chemicals and hand-picked for its quality and design.

MMS Money Makers!
Who will be the host of the next Money Maker? It could be you! You get to choose where your fundraising efforts get utilized.  To learn more, or to volunteer to host an event, please reach out to Fundraising Co Chairs Mel Rose melrosenj@gmail.com or Gabrielle Graziano  gabriellept@aol.com. They can also help you come up with great Fundraising ideas.

No Frill$
This easy way to contribute to your school is still available. There is no expiration on this fundraiser.  Not interested in throwing a party, or attending one? Click here to donate, it is that simple. Or send in a check or cash, we will take it!

Winter YouthNet Information!

12/11/2017

Hello MMS Community!

The Youthnet Winter session is now in registration and Clubs start teh week of January 8.
The brochure is attached; also here is the permission slip LINK or permission slip PDF.

********************************************************************************
Parents/Guardians,
Thank you for helping us make the Winter YouthNet Sessions a complete success. The Winter registration fee for YouthNet is also $40.00 (if your child is already in the after care YouthNet program, this registration fee does not apply).
Registering with YouthNet entitles your child to sign up for any club and participate to up to 4 clubs a week for 6 sessions.   Please check the appropriate box on the permission slip of your method of payment, which you can attach to the permission slip. NO STUDENT will be denied access to YouthNet clubs. Scholarships are welcomed and appreciated, just circle “scholarship requested.”
If you would like to donate to sponsor a student who applies for a scholarship, please circle “sponsor donation” on the permission slip.  NO STUDENT will be turned away due to a financial hardship.  Permission slips will be turned in to the coordinator, Ms. Colleen Miller in Room 166 and will be accepted no later than the second meeting of the club.

How your child signs up for a club:
  1. Choose any club from the YouthNet brochure (choose only one club per meeting day).
  2. Pick up a permission slip at one of the designated areas:  Club Advisor’s Location, Room 166, or Guidance.
  3. Send in completed permission slip indicating each club of participation to Ms. Colleen Miller (MMS YouthNet Coordinator) in Room 166 before/after school, where students will be digitally logged into their club(s).   Attach payment to the permission slip or place in a sealed envelope labeled with the student’s name and the permission slip inside.  Additionally, if you are sending in a check/money order, please make sure the student’s name is on it.  All payments will be recorded on a master list.
  4. PLEASE DO NOT BRING THE PERMISSION SLIP TO THE MAIN OFFICE.   Students can only be added to a club via room 166 with Ms. Miller.
  5. Only ONE permission slip needs to be completed and turned in, as all of the clubs are listed on it. (NOTE: It is a $40 TOTAL FEE for the fall, not $40 per club!)
  6. The registration for the Winter Session of clubs begins on December 12 and clubs will start the week of January 8 (unless otherwise noted on the permission slip).

Thank You!
