MMS HSA News - Week 22
MAPLEWOOD MIDDLE SCHOOL HOME & SCHOOL ASSOCIATION
To all that are celebrating the Lunar New Year, the HSA wishes you luck in the Year of the Rat!

For 2020, the Lunar New Year officially begins on Feb. 21.  The Lunar calendar follows the phases of the Moon and varies slightly from the Solar calendar every year.

The holiday is celebrated by a fifth (1/5) of the world’s population and observed by over 20 Asian and Southeast Asian countries, including China, Vietnam, and Korea.

It is a time to tie up loose ends, make amends, reconnect with loved ones, and say goodbye to the past year (by literally sweeping the dust out the door). You will see lots of RED decorations everywhere. The color is a symbol of luck, happiness, and prosperity.

February is packed with Winter Band and Orchestra, School Assemblies and 13! The Musical - stay on top of the calendar by adding the HSA calendar.

Important Dates:
  • Tuesday, Feb. 4: Half day for students (PD for staff)
  • Wednesday, Feb. 5: Black History Month Event . Stay tuned!
  • Feb. 13: Musical fundraiser winners will be drawn. See details below.
  • Feb. 14 and Feb. 17: School closed for President's Day

MMS HSA News - Week 20
MAPLEWOOD MIDDLE SCHOOL HOME & SCHOOL ASSOCIATION
Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.
- Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Dr. King's powerful words continue to inspire, teach and shape individuals in our community and around the world.

Maplewood Middle School will honor the life and legacy of Dr. King when it holds its annual Silent Peace March this week.  The silent march includes all students and staff from the middle school and represents a continued commitment to the ideals for which Dr. King and so many others peaceably fought.   The sight of hundreds of middle schoolers walking silently through Maplewood Village is stunning and profoundly affecting.   The march takes place Friday, Jan. 17 at approximately 9:15 a.m., beginning at the school and winding its way through the village.

Other events taking place this week include:
  • Tuesday, Jan. 14: Screenagers at South Mountain Elementary School @ 7:30 p.m.
  • Wednesday, Jan. 15: MMS HSA Meeting, MMS Library @ 7:30 p.m.
Reminders for next week:
  • Monday, Jan. 20: ALL SCHOOLS CLOSED in honor of Dr. King.

As we promote a love of reading at MMS, we would like our kids to have visually pleasing libraries and cozy places to read! Our teachers are looking for small bookshelves, bean bag chairs, and other comfy seating options for our kids.
