MMS HSA News - Week 16
MAPLEWOOD MIDDLE SCHOOL HOME & SCHOOL ASSOCIATION
Thank you to all our parents who generously donated their time and resources for our winter teacher's lunch, the musical fundraiser showing of Jumanji: The Next Level, and the Winter Choral Concert last week.

This week is Battle of the Classes and our last week of classes before the winter break. The Student Council is also organizing a food drive for MAPSO Cares this week. The YouthNet winter schedule is up!

Reminders:
  • Wednesday, Dec. 18: Musical cast meeting at 3:26 p.m.
  • Friday, Dec. 20: Half day ending at 12:30 p.m.
  • Dec. 23 through Jan. 1: School closed for Winter Break
Spirit Week by the Day
  • Monday, Dec. 16: Pajama Day
  • Tuesday, Dec. 17: Decade Day. Wear bell bottoms, crimp your hair - dress retro!
  • Wednesday, Dec. 18: Wacky Wednesday. Dress as crazy as you can. Crazy hair is welcome too!
  • Thursday, Dec. 19: Sports Day. Wear your favorite team's jersey!
  • Friday, Dec. 20: Class Colors! (6th = white; 7th = black; 8th = red)
Send in Your Spare Change!
Starting Dec. 9, students began collecting Spirit Points through Penny Wars in the cafeteria.  Pennies are negative points and everything else is positive points!

The money collected continues to fund both school stores and is also used to fund a scholarship to send at least one student to the Summer Student Council Leadership Training Conference.

MAPSO MMS Food Drive
Each month MAPSO Cares collects non-perishable food items at one of SOMSD’s elementary schools. The MMS week is part of our Battle of the Classes and Spirt Week!

Donations can be placed in the MAPSO Cares Project collection box (unless you send it in with your student in which case, they can drop it at their 1st period class).

All donations go to St. Joseph’s Food Pantry or Our Lady of Sorrows, which helps more thanr 400 families in Maplewood and South Orange. MAPSO Cares is a branch of Columbia High School’s Elementors Program through which High School Students work with elementary students as Reading Buddies, Sports Buddies, and Math Buddies. Elementors is sponsored by SOMSD’s Parenting Center. We are asking this year that Period 1 teachers ask their students to bring in reusable bags to collect the items.

Box Tops
Box Tops are still being collected for Winter and Spring Battles this year, even though the company is working toward eliminating the paper Box Tops. Consider downloading the Box Tops app to scan your receipts and support MMS!
Sign Up for YouthNet Winter 2020
Permission slips will be collected starting tomorrow for the YouthNet Winter 2020 Season. Check out our selection of clubs and afterschool activities. The session begins Jan. 6.
Winter Break
School will be closed Dec. 23 through Jan. 1 for the Winter Break. There will be a half day on Friday, Dec. 20. Have a safe and happy break! We'll see you in 2020!
Donate to Classroom Libraries
As we promote a love of reading at MMS, we would like our kids to have visually pleasing libraries and cozy places to read! Our teachers are looking for small bookshelves, bean bag chairs, and other comfy seating options for our kids.

Pictured above is the library in 8th grade ELA teacher Ms. Herstatt's class. This is a sample of what we're looking for. Please reach out to Ms. Gronau if you have items you wish to donate.

HSA Meeting
The next HSA meeting will take place on Wednesday, Jan. 15 at 7:30 p.m. in the MMS Library.

MMS HSA News - Week 14
MAPLEWOOD MIDDLE SCHOOL HOME & SCHOOL ASSOCIATION
Welcome to December MMS Families!

This week starts off with an unexpected half day on Monday due to a snow forecast (dismissal at 12:30 p.m.).  We will update if anything changes.

Reminder that Tuesday is #GivingTuesday. Will you consider donating to the MMS HSA? We are now a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, meaning your donations are tax-deductible.

Also, check out the next musical fundraiser on Dec. 13. We hope all of our students attend Opening Night of Jumanji: The Next Level at the Maplewood Theater.

Thanks again to all the parents who donated and/or came out to help for the 6th and 7th grade events last week.

Have a great week!
Veronica & Kelly
Support Maplewood Middle School on #GivingTuesday

In a time when we all need to see more good in the world, we - the MMS community - can be the good. We all want our kids to have more opportunities - more arts programs, more field trips, more chances to learn and to grow. With 832 kids, if every family gave $10, what a difference it would make. Your donation - whether it's $10 or $100 - goes directly toward field trips, cultural arts program, school beautification, teacher appreciation and so much more.

Join the global philanthropic community and be the good in the world. Help MMS give the kids all they deserve. Support the people, place and programs that are forming the foundation of our children's education.

The MMS HSA is now a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, so your donations are tax-deductible. Your company may have a matching program that could double your donation.
